Disastrously late, finally the October #PunkLyric is here. And it's actually New Wave. But superficially appropriate for this month and I wanted to include another woman singer somewhere in this project so we're breaking the rules! Annabella Lwin was only 14 when she was discovered by Malcom McLaren to form Bow Wow Wow with ex-members of Adam Ant's band. The thing I remember most about the tribal, drum-heavy I Want Candy is that it was on heavy rotation on newly-debuted MTV. In those early days of new media the desert-location/lip-sync was all the rage. This was 1982— check out those special effects! Note that the fashion is totally on trend now, too.
At my house we didn't have the luxury of cable or MTV, and remember, the internet had not yet been born. So to find out what was going on in art, music and fashion it was sometimes imperative to ditch school to go watch MTV at a friend's house.
Here is the original Strangeloves 1965 version of I Want Candywhich sounds HEAVILY INFLUENCED by Bo Diddley's Hey Bo Diddleyperformed here in 1965. OMG— watch that one all the way thorough, the dancing, the rhythm the fans!
I’ve chosen some favorite short phrases of punk song lyrics to flourishly illustrate these expressions that were of such importance to me and my generation. I’m calling the series #PunkLyric and offering them as free desktop calendar downloads each month. [see full explanation here]
